NPCLN through the efforts of Manohar Subramanium & Gordon Brown of Life Advance Community Centre, have initiated the now Taranaki wide coordinated approach to Tsunami disaster relief fund raising efforts. Meeting with Mayor Pete in the days immediately following the Tsunami, the idea grew rapidly to become Taranaki wide. The Red Cross was chosen unanimously by all parties as the specialist organisation through which disaster relief monies would be channelled.![]() PROJECT PLAN: Those involved with the establishment of the Taranaki Tsunami Project Trust yesterday mull over a plan to build houses in areas hit by the Boxing Day tsunami. Photo: Mark Taylor/Taranaki Daily News By agreement, churches associated with NPCLN will channel all monies ear-marked for the Tsunami relief appeal via NPCLN. This will be given in bulk to the Red Cross as funds come in. In addition and in agreement with the Red Cross, Habibtat for Humanity will also be involved in project and rebuilding work. This money represents donations from many churches and individuals, and include profits from the recent Ben Lummis community concert held on the 22nd of January at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands. NPCLN are please to be able to partner with the District Council and the Red Cross to help bring relief to the Tsunami victims in Asia at this time. Tsunami Projects updateTaranaki Daily News 17 February 2005:Taranaki generosity helps re-house tsunami victims Taranaki generosity will build people homes and a training centre in tsunami-ravaged Asia. Yesterday, fundraising organisers announced the major project as the next phase in the local response to the Boxing Day disaster. Fundraising for emergency relief has already netted $277,000, but charity efforts would now focus on practical long-term steps to help those hundreds of thousands of people left homeless in the wake of the tsunami. In conjunction with Habitat for Humanity, future fundraising in Taranaki would go towards building an $NZ85,000 disaster response technical centre and $NZ1500 houses. |
